Councillor Bio

My Mount Isa story begins in 1997 when I came here as a fourth year teacher to do my country service. Mount Isa had the reputation of being a great place for young people to come and I have never regretted that decision. Mount Isa has presented me with many great opportunities and I have made many wonderful friends during the time I have lived here.

My husband Mal and I have two children who both attended Townview State School for their primary schooling. We have found Mount Isa to be a terrific place to raise young children as there are many sporting activities available and during this time I spent many years after work racing between swimming, dancing, tennis, football, touch, instrumental music and gymnastics. This also gave me the opportunity to meet many people in the various clubs that our town could not be without. Our daughter has recently completed high school and has now become the 4th generation of MacRae’s living and working in Mount Isa.

I have worked at many schools in Mount Isa including Townview, Central, Mount Isa School of the Air and Happy Valley. During this time I have worked with hundreds of students and implemented training with as many teachers. I feel the highlight of my career while working for Education Queensland was helping teachers, principals and schools prepare for the transition from preschool to prep in Queensland State Schools. I believe this experience of working with stakeholders during a time of great structural and organisational change will hold me in good stead in working within a council team.

My husband and I now own a local business and I run this full time with the help of my team. Owning the business has allowed me to become an active member of Zonta and I am currently on the board of the Commerce North West. This has given me a greater understanding of how business works in our area and it has provided an opportunity to promote small business and in particular, the retail sector. We also sponsor numerous local events and Wanderers Rugby League each year.

Given the honour of being elected as councillor, I will be focusing on creating a better lifestyle and sense of community for Mount Isa and all of its residents. Mount Isa is fortunate to have many fabulous facilities and I want to see these assets maintained and promoted for the use of all residents. I sincerely believe I can make a positive difference to the city of Mount Isa and I will always have the best interests of its residents at heart. I am honoured to serve Mount Isa as a Councillor.
