Council is required to develop a plan outlining how it will reduce waste and improve recycling, the draft strategy has been developed to align with the requirements of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 and community needs for waste management within the Mount Isa region.

This strategy outlines how Council will over a five-year period reduce the volume of material sent to landfill, improve recycling and meet its statutory obligations. This document will form a part of Council’s strategic documents and will guide decision making. The document once adopted will be integrated into the operational planning and budgeting cycle to ensure accountability and delivery.

The document has been developed into five themes, these are:

  1. Improve waste diversion and reduce waste generation;
  2. Prepare waste infrastructure for a future ready economy;
  3. Waste education;
  4. Minimise environmental and public health waste impacts;
  5. Operational compliance and efficiency.

Each theme has a set of clear targets and actions which describe how the target and theme will be delivered over the life of the document.
