Motor Sports Complex Advisory Committee to be Formed

Council is pushing ahead with the North West Motor Sports Complex Advisory Committee, with terms of reference adopted and Council agreeing to form the advisory committee from previously submitted nominations.

The advisory committee will be chaired by Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick and will give local community, State Government and business representatives the opportunity to provide advice and feedback to Council on matters relevant to the North West Motor Sports Park.

The committee will also assist Council by providing guidance on infrastructure, sustainability, technical and other relevant issues related to the precinct.

The decision was made at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday, October 20.

“Council was successful in securing a 30-year trustee lease arrangement of a parcel of land off the eastern side of Moondarra Drive in June this year on which we are looking to have the Motor Sports Park built, so now is the right time to move forward with the establishment of the precinct’s advisory committee,” Cr Barwick said.

“I thank everyone who submitted an expression of interest in early 2020 to be a member of the committee.

“We will now go ahead with putting the committee together from these nominations and will be in contact with nominees in due course.

“There are major and important steps that still need to be taken for the precinct – such as the completion of an Environmental Impact Statement, concept design and business case – and the input and feedback from committee members will be crucial in these processes.”

Mayor Danielle Slade said Mount Isa has an enormous number of residents who are keen to see a motor sports complex in the city.

“It’s an exciting sport and offers a controlled and safe environment for motor sport fans to watch and participate in their sport,” Cr Slade said.

“It also keeps anti-social behaviour off our streets. As far as I’m concerned, this can’t happen soon enough.”

The advisory committee will be responsible for planning and policy development; assessing and comparing the design and sustainability aspects of existing facilities in similar regional areas in Australia; the facilitation of partnerships, community and user-participation programs; attracting funding from government and the private sector; resolving issues and risks for Council and the general community and visiting public; and providing support to specific project working groups established by Council from time to time.
