Mount Isa 100 Years Celebration

Happy Birthday, Mount Isa!

In 2023, Mount Isa celebrates the 100th anniversary of John Campbell Miles signing the mining lease that gave rise to Mount Isa. This will be a year to remember for everyone. From those who have spent their entire lives in the city, to those just arriving, and those who have moved in and out over the years, the celebrations are for you.

Events Calendar

Thank you to everyone who has already had input into the project through feedback and to those on the 100 Years Advisory Committee who have got us to where we are. This is only the start. Mount Isa City Council has received a grant through the Building Better Regions Fund to contribute towards some of the events that will drive celebrations above and beyond what we have seen before. The success of the 100 Year Celebrations will depend upon you. Our role is to help co-ordinate and assist all community groups who want to contribute. One critical aspect is to ensure that our calendar of events for the community has as few conflicts as possible. If you have an event scheduled, even if it is only in the planning stage, please CLICK HERE to register a date claimer. We will be in touch to work with you to get the best out of your event.

If you haven’t thought about it yet, but want to be involved, get in touch and we will do our best to work through the process with you. Communication is the key to success and the 100 Year Celebrations need the community to work together to achieve the desired outcomes. This will only happen if we can all talk to one another. Use this page as a means to start the dialogue.

We have a 100 Year Event Co-Ordinator on board who would love to hear from you. Contact Ross Prowd at or mobile 0412 712 181.

Building Better Regions Community Investments Funding

In early October, Council was successful in receiving $506,900 in funding for the Mount Isa 100 Years Celebrations, thanks to the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund Community Investments Stream Round 5. Council’s contribution of $217,240 is part of its funding obligation, for a total amount of $724,140.

The funding will be used to build on Mount Isa’s flagship events in 2023, such as the Mount Isa Mines Rodeo, Mount Isa Show, MineX mining expo, and the Isa Street Festival, as well as to develop new events, such as the 100-year reunion, founders’ day, and local Indigenous art displays.

It's anticipated the 100-year reunion dinner will be a gala-style event that will attract people who once lived in the city back to Mount Isa.

The Founders’ Day Underground Experience at Outback at Isa aims to tell stories from Traditional Owners about the country and people before Mount Isa was established and feature long-term residents’ stories of "back in the day".
