Deputy Mayor Kim Coghlan and Councillor Travis Crowther this morning welcomed 10 Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run participants to Mount Isa and took part in a tree-planting at Buchanan Park to mark their visit to the city.

The participants – part of a group of 15 – arrived in Mount Isa on Sunday, July 13, before leaving on Monday, July 14, as part of a 15,000km-long nationwide torch relay for peace.

Cr Coghlan and Cr Crowther joined members of Council’s Parks and Gardens team in helping to plant a fig tree near Buchanan Park’s north entrance. Similar tree-plantings have taken place at more than 200 locations nationwide as part of the relay.

The group presented Cr Coghlan with a certificate of appreciation as well as a plaque, which will soon be installed in front of the tree.

Cr Coghlan told the group she appreciated the relay runners’ efforts.

“I know sometimes you don’t know how you touch people, because the benefits happen after. I wish you all a safe journey, because you’ve got a fair bit to go,” Cr Coghlan said.

The Australian Peace Run began in Canberra on April 24, where it will wrap up in mid-August. This is the third Peace Run to take place in Australia, with this year’s relay marking the first time it’s travelled around the entire continent.

The runners originate from countries including New Zealand, Romania, Russia, the USA, Mongolia, Australia, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova.
