New Citizens, New Chapter in Mount Isa

Mount Isa City Council proudly welcomed 54 new Australian citizens at a special Australian Citizenship Ceremony held on Thursday, 17 September 2026.

The ceremony marked an important milestone for Mount Isa’s newest citizens as they made their Australian Citizenship Pledge, surrounded by family, friends and members of the local community.

Mayor Peta MacRae, Deputy Mayor Kim Coghlan and Kalkadoon PBC Director Barbara Sam joined the ceremony to welcome and congratulate the new citizens.

The group represented Mount Isa’s diverse and multicultural community, with citizens born across countries including Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Indonesia, Thailand, Kuwait, the Philippines, India, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Mauritius, Samoa, Tuvalu and Fiji.

Mayor MacRae said citizenship ceremonies were always a special occasion for the city and an opportunity to celebrate the people who have chosen to make Mount Isa their home.

“It is a privilege to welcome 51 new Australian citizens and celebrate this significant milestone alongside their families and friends,” Mayor MacRae said.

“Every person taking the Citizenship Pledge has their own story and journey that has brought them to this moment, and we are proud that Mount Isa forms part of that story.

“Our city is home to people from many different cultures and backgrounds, and that diversity is an important part of what makes the Mount Isa community so special.

“On behalf of Mount Isa City Council, congratulations to our newest Aussies. We wish you all the very best as you begin this special new chapter as Australian citizens.”

The ceremony was held in recognition of Australian Citizenship Day, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the value and meaning of Australian citizenship and reflect on the rights, responsibilities and shared values that unite Australians.

The ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognise the contribution migrants and new citizens make to Mount Isa through their workplaces, families, neighbourhoods and wider community.

Held in recognition of Australian Citizenship Day, the ceremony encouraged the wider community to reflect on what Australian citizenship represents and the shared values, rights and responsibilities that bring Australians together.
