Mount Isa City Council welcomes commencement of Mount Isa Transformation Study
18 May 2026
Mount Isa City Council welcomes the commencement of the Mount Isa Transformation Study, recognising the significant opportunities it presents for the future of Mount Isa and the wider North West Queensland region.
Announced jointly by the Australian and Queensland Governments, the study will assess future opportunities across the copper value chain, industrial capability, infrastructure and long-term regional growth throughout North West Queensland.
Mayor Peta MacRae said the announcement was an important step in supporting the long-term future of Mount Isa and strengthening confidence across the region.
“Mount Isa has long been at the centre of the North West Minerals Province, and this study is an important opportunity to explore how we continue to grow, diversify and strengthen our regional economy,” Mayor MacRae said.
“This is about looking toward the future and identifying opportunities that support jobs, industry, investment and long-term sustainability for our community.”
“Council’s Future Ready Economy Roadmap has already identified the importance of diversification, innovation and investment attraction for Mount Isa’s future, and the study complements that work.”
“We all know Mount Isa has enormous potential - not only through mining and resources, but also through innovation, manufacturing, infrastructure and industry support.”
“This study provides an opportunity to further understand how the region can continue to evolve and remain a strong contributor to both Queensland and Australia’s economies.”
Mount Isa City Council is looking forward to engaging with stakeholders throughout the study and advocating for outcomes that support the long-term prosperity and resilience of the Mount Isa community.
