Mayoral Minute - April 2025
Published on 02 May 2025
I would like to start by thanking the team for their work on helping with the logistics for Anzac Day, and the RSL for organising once again.
There was a terrific turnout by the community, and as I have said on social media platforms, it’s the main event of the year where the community comes together in a united way and to pay respect to those who have served, and continue to serve, our country and community.
Thanks to Councillor James Coghlan, who went to Camooweal to represent Council. I understand there were about 100 people in attendance, so it’s great to see that the community spirit and respect is alive and well in Camooweal.
The last month has been extremely busy, with the North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (ROC) delegation taking place in Brisbane, and the Queensland Resources Council’s meeting happening the week after.
Both of these events were well attended by all councils. Getting together as a group and advocating for our regions is how we will ultimately get the results we require.
May will be even busier, with North West MPX and the North West Queensland ROC both happening right here in Mount Isa.
In the first week of May, we’ll have many visitors here in town spending nights and generating revenue for our small businesses.
North West MPX kicks off on May 6 with the evening welcome event, and the section open to the general public is on Thursday May 8 for the RJC Jobs Expo. They can also find out more about the exhibitors at the North West MPX.
I understand there will be an official visit by the Assistant Minister for Finance, Trade, Employment and Training Amanda Stoker MP at that event.
The Council CEO and I will be doing a presentation about why Mount Isa is the smart answer to a critical question.
I’ve also been invited to speak at the Townsville and North Queensland Critical Minerals Forum held on May 27. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase what Mount Isa has to offer.
Our next major event will be the Go Green Isa Day, which was formerly known as Free Plants Day, on Saturday, May 31, in and around the Mount Isa Mines Entertainment Centre at Buchanan Park.
The Environmental Services team did an amazing job last year, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with this year. That event is funded through the money raised from Council’s Environmental Levy.
