Local ballet fans are in for a treat when the Australian premiere of Ballet Preljocaj’s Swan Lake is screened for free at the Mount Isa Civic Centre on Friday, June 13.

The Civic Centre is one of 17 venues from across Queensland that will be hosting special screenings of the performance between June 13 and 15. It will be performed and recorded in Brisbane on June 4 at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s (QPAC) Lyric Theatre.

The music will be performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Johannes Fritzsch.

Founded in 1985 by maverick French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, Ballet Preljocaj last wowed audiences in Queensland in 2016 with the sell-out season of Snow White at QPAC.

QPAC Chief Executive Rachel Healy said Angelin and Ballet Preljocaj completely throw out the rules of ballet.

“Whether you are witnessing their magic in the theatre or on the big screen, I am confident audiences will be challenged and inspired by this new interpretation of a masterpiece,” Rachel said.

“We couldn’t reach such broad audiences without the collaboration of our partner venues across Queensland; and we’re incredibly grateful for their shared passion for the arts and applaud their commitment to ensuring their communities can experience this internationally acclaimed company.”

Preljocaj’s Swan Lake is a dystopian juxtaposition of corporate greed – in which Siegfried is the son of a wealthy property developer – and the pristine environment of the swans, which sees Odette and the Prince as eco-warriors battling the fossil-fuelled industrialist Rothbart.

Councillor Travis Crowther, who has the Events portfolio, is encouraging locals to come along and make the most of the opportunity to see the screening of this much-loved ballet performance.

“It’s not often that we in Mount Isa get a chance to experience a show of this calibre for free, so I’d really like to see as many people as possible come along on the night to enjoy the production,” Cr Crowther said.

“I would like to thank QPAC and the State Government for making this event possible and for bringing it to our community.”

People can book their free tickets online at EventBrite.

Ballet Preljocaj’sSwan Lakewill run in the Lyric Theatre from May 31 to June 7 and is an exclusive Australian season as part of the QPAC International Series and QPAC’s 40th anniversary celebrations. The QPAC International Series is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.
