A program that encourages people to get active and stay healthy by offering a range of free fitness activities will take place in Mount Isa thanks to Council and funding from the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF).

The MoveIT NQ program is an initiative of the NQSF, in partnership with the Western Queensland Primary Health Network, and will be rolled out in the coming weeks after Council agreed at its October 14 Ordinary Meeting to endorse the initiative, with $15,000 of funding provided by the NQSF.

The activities to be funded are fitness development, tai chi and aquarobics.

MoveIT aims to support healthier and active lifestyles and increase participation in sport and active recreation.

Councillor Peta MacRae, who looks after the Sports and Recreation portfolio, said it was very pleasing to see that MoveIT will be coming to Mount Isa, following its success in other centres such as Charters Towers, Richmond, Cairns and Mackay.

“MoveIT is customised to each community in which it’s set up and involves local sports-based businesses and organisations,” Cr MacRae said.

“These activities have a number of health benefits, including weight management, building healthy bones and muscles, a reduction in the risk of many chronic diseases, and an improvement in mental health and social wellbeing.

“If you haven’t been involved with something for some time, it’s a great opportunity to start.

“I encourage anyone who might not have tried something for a while to get out there and give it a go and enjoy the activities that will be on offer.”
