Council will remove four of the fig trees on the northern end of East Street this weekend to ensure the safety of local residents, pedestrians and motorists.

The Moreton Bay fig trees will be removed this Saturday and Sunday (March 21 and 22) by a local tree lopper, after an examination determined they had suffered from the effects of fungus rot and age and are now hollow.

The contractor has informed the surrounding property owners and residents about the pending work.

The trees have been around for more than 20 years but now pose a public safety risk.

The remaining eight or so trees on that section of East Street are in satisfactory condition.

Traffic control will be set up on the affected section of East Street and, for safety reasons, people are asked to stay away from the site while the removal work is being carried out this weekend.
