COVID Update - Tuesday, February 22, 2022

Published: 22nd February 2022

As at 7pm on February 21, the total COVID-19 cases in the North West Hospital and Health Service (NWHHS) is 1,902. Of these, none have been recorded in the last 24 hours.

NWHHS has aligned COVID-19 reporting with Queensland Health’s COVID-19 statistics webpage, located at https://bit.ly/covid-19-statistics-qldhealth. Figures are updated daily and reflect the latest case numbers as at 7pm on the previous day.

NWHHS is saddened to confirm the first COVID-related death in the North West following the death of a man in his 60s. NWHHS extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and community.

To date, there have been close to 5,000 COVID-19-related deaths in Australia. The likelihood of further deaths can be reduced by our community members ensuring each is up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations including a booster shot.

Vaccinations remain important, particularly in the face of such a contagious variant as omicron. Younger Australians aged 20-39 have seen the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic with higher percentages of COVID-19 cases experienced in this age group.

Getting a vaccine and a booster shot is the best thing you can do to prevent you and your loved ones from suffering the ill effects of COVID-19 that can include severe illness, hospitalisation and even death.

If you’ve had COVID-19 once, you can still get it again. Having a booster means you’re far less likely to get severe illness should you get infected again.

Combined with COVID safe behaviours, a booster dose gives us the best chance of keeping our community safe and helping us continue to do more of the things we enjoy. Booster vaccinations are available at all NWHHS facilities. The NWHHS COVID-19 vaccination centre at the Mount Isa Civic Centre in West Street operates from:

  • 9am to 6pm - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday
  • 1pm to 8pm - Thursday

The Buchanan Park drive-through COVID-19 testing clinic is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am until 12pm. Community members should remain in their car and follow the direction of staff members who are there to provide assistance.
