The Mount Isa City Council Australia Day Awards are coming up, and residents are being urged to nominate outstanding locals for their work in the community or their achievements.

Mayor Danielle Slade said the Australia Day Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and community groups in our region and are an opportunity to publicly acknowledge those who have made an outstanding contribution to the community or an exceptional achievement.

“There are eight categories in the awards – including Junior and Senior Citizen of the Year, Junior and Senior Sports Award, Community Event of the Year, and the Arts and Culture Award – so there is plenty of scope to nominate a deserving local you may know of,” Cr Slade said.

“A lot of the work that people do makes a lasting and significant difference to the quality of life in the community, yet often flies under the radar.

"These awards are the perfect way to let the light of these inspirational residents shine for the rest of the community to see and appreciate.”

Previous Mount Isa Citizens of the Year have included Bob Jakeman, Grant Szabadics, Joyce Brogden, and Mary-Jane Caldwell.

“If you know of a person or community group dedicated to making the Mount Isa region a better place, help us recognise their efforts and nominate them for a 2022 Australia Day Award,” Cr Slade said.

Nominations can be submitted by going to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8HNHS6Q.

Nominations will be open until Monday January 3, 2022.
