First Hurdle Cleared on Proposed Mount Isa Motorsports Park

The first hurdle in a motorsports park for Mount Isa has been cleared, with the land recently released to Council in a trustee lease arrangement.

Council was formally advised of the transfer last Friday, May 28. It is subject to a number of conditions, such as the completion of a full Environmental Impact Statement and a connection of services to the site including electricity, telecommunications, water and sewer.

Motorsports Park Advisory Committee chairman and Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick said Council’s next step will be to conduct a full feasibility study of a motorsports facility on the land, which is on the eastern side of Moondarra Drive (after the first cattle grid).

“This is great news for the city and great news for the many motorsports enthusiasts in the community,” Cr Barwick said.

“I would like to thank the Mount Isa Water Board for their support during this whole process, as well as the State Government for supporting us in the motorsports concept.

“I’m glad to see that a lot of the administrative processes are now done with, but there is a lot that still needs to be done, including the Environmental Impact Statement on the land.

“Once that’s done, down the track we’ll look at doing early concept and design work and a business case for the facility before we apply for funding.

“This project is great for the economic development work that Council is doing for the city, and we’ll be looking to move as quickly as we possibly can – however, these things do take time.”

Mayor Danielle Slade said this is great news for Mount Isa.

“I would like to thank the Mount Isa Water Board and the State Government for releasing the land to Council,” Cr Slade said.

“I’m now really looking forward to a committee being formed and getting some momentum going. We’re not running on all cylinders just yet, but it’s a great start.

“Having the Environmental Impact Statement, concept design and business case will enable Council to drive the agenda when it comes to seeking funding to make this facility a reality.”
