Hear More About Materials Recovery Facility at Information Sessions

Community members have the opportunity to attend an information session to hear more about Council’s plans to construct a Materials Recovery Facility and introduce a new residential kerbside rubbish-collection system.

Council has received about $5 million from the Federal Government to construct a Materials Recovery Facility and introduce kerbside recycling to Mount Isa.

The project will involve the construction of a sorting facility for recyclables and the introduction of a fortnightly residential kerbside recycling (“yellow-top”) bin collection, combined with a weekly garbage collection, as per current practice across the majority of Australia.

At the community information sessions – which will be held from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Monday, May 24, and from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Monday, May 31, in the Council Chambers at 23 West Street – residents will hear about what is proposed and will have the opportunity to raise questions or concerns about the project with Council staff.

The Federal and State governments are now introducing a range of initiatives in order to further drive recycling and waste minimisation and which reflect community concerns regarding the environmental cost of landfilling.

Mount Isa is one of the last population centres in Australia not to have kerbside recycling.
