Council has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting local small businesses, officially endorsing the Small Business Friendly Councils (SBFC) initiative.

By signing up to the SBFC – an initiative of the Queensland Small Business Commissioner – Council has made a pledge to be mindful of small businesses and their issues and priorities when making decisions for the local community.

Mayor Danielle Slade said the endorsement of the initiative is an acknowledgement by Council of the importance of small business in the community and a clear sign of Council’s support.

“Small businesses are at the heart of their communities and now more than ever, especially given the economic ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s crucially important that councils such as ours get behind small businesses,” Cr Slade said.

“They create local employment opportunities and attractive, liveable communities, provide essential goods and services, and play a critical role in the social fabric of the region.

“Keeping money and jobs in the local community will ensure Mount Isa’s economy remains strong, resilient and adaptable going forward. We are pleased to sign up to this initiative, through which we pledge to local small businesses that we will support them in whatever ways we can.”

Commerce North West President Chris Boshoff said the organisation looks forward to working with Council and the Office of the Small Business Commissioner in adopting initiatives that will see tangible benefits being made to the Mount Isa small business community.

Across Queensland there are about 445,000 small businesses, which create more than 914,000 employment opportunities in their communities and contribute about $120 billion per year to the State’s economy.
