It’s often said that local councils form the level of government that is closest to the community. But what does that mean?

It means that more than any other level of government, councils have a direct and immediate connection to the people they serve. Through the good times and the bad - like last summer’s string of natural disasters - councils provide the services and the facilities that help communities grow stronger and more resilient.

It means Queensland’s 73 councils provide the libraries, the bike paths, the roads and the parks that people use every day. They are naturally dedicated to showcasing the best of their community because it is the people of that community who work for them.
