Mount Isa Local Heritage Study and Register of Places

The Queensland Cultural Heritage Act 1992 aims to conserve Queensland’s cultural heritage and requires all local governments to keep a register of local places of cultural heritage significance. Mount Isa City Council commissioned heritage consultants, Converge Heritage + Community, in October 2011 to undertake a heritage study to identify places of potential local heritage significance in the Mount Isa Local Government Area. This work was conducted in association with Harrison Grierson Consultants Pty Limited whom are currently undertaking a review and update of the Mount Isa City Council Planning Scheme.

Council’s heritage consultants have now completed the heritage study and have recommended 25 places to be entered on Mount Isa’s Local Heritage Register. The proposed Register can be viewed by clicking here.

The heritage study was undertaken to properly document those places that are culturally significant and important to the history of Mount Isa and Camooweal. Identifying these places, entering them onto a local heritage register and incorporating them into the Mount Isa Planning Scheme will help protect them for future generations. This approach allows for a balance between the need for future development and the need to retain elements of our past that contribute to the area’s heritage and character.

More information about the Local Heritage Register can be found in the following Factsheets:

There are 9 places on the Local Heritage Register that are also on the Queensland State Heritage Register. More information about these places can be found by visiting the Department of Natural Resources and Mines website at: www.derm.qld.gov.au/heritage/index.html

Public Notification and Submissions

The proposed Local Heritage Register will be publicly notified for 20 business days between April 19, 2012 and May 21, 2012 in accordance with the requirements set out by the QLD Cultural Heritage Act 1992.
Members of the public can make submissions about the proposed Local Heritage Register during the notification period (April 19, 2012 - May 21, 2012). For information about how to make a submission, please click here.

What Happens Next?

Once the submission period closes, Council will review each submission and make a final decision about the places to be included on the Local Heritage Register. In accordance with the Queensland Heritage Act, the Register must be adopted by Council within 80 business days of the date the notice was first published in the newspaper. Therefore, the Register must be adopted by August 13, 2012 (however, the Register can be adopted earlier than this date). Council will send a letter advising of its decision to place owners and anyone who makes a submission.
