Economic development is an important ingredient in the success of any community.
While focusing on policies that promote growth, Council also recognises that the key objectives need to also protect the core values that make Mount Isa such a great place to live and work.
The Mount Isa City Council employs a dedicated Economic Development officer, who is also a member of Economic Development Australia (the national professional body for economic development practitioners and professionals).
It is their role, where possible, to provide relevant information to investors and others interested In discovering the opportunities that Mount Isa has to offer. They can also offer advice on other information sources, or put you in touch with the ‘right people’ (including other council officers who may be better able to assist with your enquiry).
The Economic Development Officer can provide an overview of the city, or explain the investment climate and resources available in the region. They are also able to assist in facilitating involvement from a number of council partners where appropriate, such as:
- The Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce
- The Mount Isa Tourism Association
- Xstrata Mount Isa Mines
- Desert Knowledge
- Mount Isa to Townsville Economic Development Zone
Mount Isa recently celebrated its 85th year of commerce and community, and are looking forward to the next 85. Having successfully weathered the global economic crisis, Mount Isa and the region is moving forward in leaps and bounds. Recently, Xstrata announced that it would be investing a further $580 million into Ernest Henry Mine, located only an hour and a half away from the Mount Isa CBD.
And with new jobs, comes increased demand for accommodation and support services. The Mount Isa City Council has developed the Healy Heights land release, with plots still available. The council is also looking forward into continuing this support for increased accommodation provision, by investigating a number of other land packages that could be similarly developed to ensure workers and their families are able to make Mount Isa their home.
