From its humble beginnings over 85 years ago as Australia’s first ‘company town’, Mount Isa has grown to become one of the largest and most important industrial powerhouses in the nation.
Mount Isa is a vibrant and progressive city of more than 23,500, and has become the administrative, commercial, and industrial centre of North West Queensland. It covers an area of over 43,310 sq km (including the township of Camooweal), making it the second largest city in Australia to Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The Mount Isa City Council operates tourism and entertainment facilities, supports local industry and commerce, and provides for the needs of all residents and visitors alike.
Our region produces some of the country’s best beef, and is known internationally as one of the worlds top 10 producers of copper, lead, silver, and zinc. Mount Isa is also home to the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo, the award winning Buchanan park, the new Family Fun Park, and the annual Xstrata Mining Expo.
But Mount Isa is not just about mining… it is a family friendly city, rich with community pride. A land of opportunity with regard to career, education, and lifestyle. From the $4.25 million all-abilities family park opened in June 2009 to the Lake Moondarra Barramundi Fishing Classic, from the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo to the ample retail and shopping facilities, there is a wide variety of attractions that make visiting, living, and working in the city such an attraction.
