The Mount Isa program was initiated in 2002 following the formation of the Mount Isa Safe Community Advisory Team (MISCAT). Relevant stakeholders and existing injury prevention initiatives were involved with the view of improving the local injury picture in the City over the long-term. The first meeting was held on 30 October 2002 and included a number of representatives from government and non-government agencies.

There are currently several working groups involved with more planned:

  • Substance Misuse Working Group
  • North West Road Safety Working Group
  • Family Violence Community Action Group
  • Physical Activity Action Team
  • Childhood Injury Prevention Group
  • Safety in Custody
  • Seniors Safety
  • Crime & Safety
  • Living with Lead Alliance (LWLA)

The Mount Isa City Council fully supports the objectives of the Mount Isa Safe Community and has four dedicated representatives who are active members on various working groups and on the Advisory Team.

Mount Isa was officially designated as a safe community by the World Health Organisation in February 2009.
