Mount Isa City Council Community Plan Mount Isa City Council Community Plan

Mount Isa City Council's first Community Plan

This long term vision for the future of Mount Isa City was developed using the invaluable information provided by residents and visitors of Mount Isa through extensive community engagement processes undertaken earlier in 2011.

The Mount Isa City Community Plan 2011-2021 will play a vital role in guiding the Mount Isa City Council into the future.

What is a community plan?

As part of the new Local Government Act, all councils across Queensland must develop a Community Plan which outlines a vision for their region for a minimum of 10 years.

A community plan describes a desired future... goals, strategies and key actions for a local government area.  It is an aspirational plan that articulates the long term future for the local government area as well as strategies to implement the vision.

It is effectively a strategic plan at a community level.

Community involvement

It is vitally important that the Mount Isa City Council Community Plan accurately reflects the wants, needs, and opinions of as many members of the community as possible.

The Mount Isa City Council undertook phone surveys (about 10 minutes in duration), public surveys (in the CBD), and provided the survey to as many businesses and organisations as possible for distribution.

Council staff also visited local schools to get students opinions, as well as surveying visitors to the community during the data collection period.

What about the youth?

For those members of our young community who were unable to fill out the survey, we provided the opportunity for them to put forward their ideas by drawing us a picture of what they would like to see Mount Isa like in 10 years.

Even though the survey data collection period is closed, you can still download this resource below if you are interested.

So you collected the data, what happened next?

That is an excellent question...

The initial survey data was completed and compiled on 13th May 2011), and a series of local Community Engagement Sessions were held.

Starting on Wednesday the 6th of July, these Community Information Sessions were held throughout Mount Isa and Camooweal.

6th June - Camooweal Town Hall - 3.30pm to 5.00pm

7th June - Mount Isa PCYC (Specified Youth Engagement) - 6.00pm to 7.00pm

8th June - Buchanan Park Events Complex (Xstrata Entertainment Centre) - 5.30pm to 7.00pm

9th June - Mount Isa Civic Centre - 3.00pm to 4.30pm

It is important to note that every step has been taken to ensure the integrity of the data collected. No identifiable information was collected during the survey, all responses are anonymous, and the data has been collated by external specialists.

Even the Community Information Sessions were facilitated by staff from James Cook University's Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health in a professional capacity.

The plan was to get EVERYBODY to get involved... the more responses we had, the more data we acquired, the more people who told us what is important to them... the better the Community Plan would reflect the opinions and visions of the whole community.
