Drainage

The Mount Isa City Council is responsible for a number of types of drainage systems throughout the district. These include:

Open earth drains

The maintenance of these drains (including long grass) is carried out on a suburb by suburb program. Some delays will be experienced during the wet seasons due to the large increase in maintenance work load.

Piped Storm Water

A very extensive drainage system exists beneath the City. The system comprises Reinforced Concrete Box Culverts and Reinforced Concrete Pipe. Road water is collected by kerbing in most areas and delivered into the drainage system via kerb inlets, gully inlets, etc.

Property Drainage

Property owners are responsible for the maintenance of all property internal drainage systems including the connection into Council's storm water system.

Permission to access Council's storm water system must be sought in writing before any alteration to Council's system may occur.

Water

Council is responsible for the supply of water to Mount Isa and the township of Camooweal.
Council operates a Total Management Plan to regulate water supply.

Camooweal uses a sub-artesian bore supply with pumps pressurising the system. Any excess is stored in two tanks on platforms. The town supply is chlorinated after the bores, on the way to the town.

Camooweal has 2.6kms of pipe mains varying in size from 80 to 150mm servicing a population of 250 people. The two tanks have a storage capacity of 36Kls supplied by two bores of a combined capacity of 500L/min flows.

Mount Isa has 174kms of mains ranging in size from 80 to 450mm, with five reservoirs servicing a population of 23 500 people.

Water Meters

Council meters the consumption of all water connections within the city of Mount Isa.
Presently, domestic users have an allowance of 900 kls per year with another 50kls allocated to keep the nature strip in good condition.

Excess water charges apply to domestic water consumption beyond these amounts.
Council maintain meters to accurately measure consumption and assess the need for replacement of meters if discrepancies outside of acceptable limits occur. For further information, contact Council during working hours on 4747 3200.
