SAVE WATER, SAVE MONEY, SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT
Tips on How to be Waterwise
Saving water is good for the country and good for the future. See how you can do your bit for both
The average Australian family uses about 1300 litres of water around the home everyday. Do we really need that much? Here are some useful tips that can help you save water, save money and save the environment... And it won't even affect your lifestyle.
-
Save in the Shower
Take a short shower, save water and power.
Having a bath uses less water than a long shower and can save up to 250 litres.
Install a water-saving shower head to cut down the flow.
-
You can save in the loo too!
Most toilets use 12 litres per flush. Install a dual flush toilet...a half flush will do most of the time.
-
Water on the run can be a waste
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth to save 5 litres. put the plug in when shaving, rinsing dishes or wahing vegetables.
-
Fill up before you wash
Wait for a full load of washing before turning on the washing machine. Washing machines on average use 105 litres per load and dishwashers 35 litres for every wash.
-
Too much love can drown your plants
When watering your plants, use a timer. A forgotten sprinkler wastes heaps, around 1000 litres an hour. A good soak twice a week is all a garden needs. Water the roots not the leaves. Install a drip system, get the water where its really needed. Use a good mulch to reduce evaporation. Get rid of weeds, they use water too.
-
Give your wheels a bucket full
When you wash the car, don't leave the hose running. A bucket of soapy water is all the car needs, then give it a quick rinse with the hose.
-
A clean sweep is better
Cleaning paths and driveway's with a broom is better than using a hose, which can use up to 100 litres.
-
Water is fun, but remember, it costs
5 minutes playing with the hose uses 100 litres or more!
-
Don't be a drip
Drips and leaks waste heaps. A tap that drips everyday can waste up to 200 litres a day.
