Mount Isa City Council to develop new Animal Management Centre

Mount Isa City Council’s dedication to providing and promoting responsible animal management has just undertaken a major advancement with Council acquiring the animal facility at 21 Richardson Road after the retirement of current owners.

With Council having used part of property at 21 Richardson Road since 1977 for the pound, the decision was taken to take over the facility and expand on Council’s animal management commitments when the opportunity arose.

Mayor Joyce McCulloch said the facility will undergo a refurbishment which will see the facility developed into a multifaceted Animal Management Centre.

“This new facility will house exercise yards for animals in our care, a dog training yard, visitor/volunteer stay over sites and an overall upgrade of the existing facilities,” Cr McCulloch said.

“Work will begin on the refurbishments in early August and will be completed by the end of June 2019. This initiative of Council, is aligned with our Economic Development Strategy and our new strategic direction of Councils Local Laws Team.”

The project is funded by Council’s successful application for $440,000 from the State Government’s Works for Queensland program, stage 2.

Council wishes to thank outgoing owners Jean and Andrew Pennington for the care given to animals at the facility throughout the years, and wish them well in their new endeavours.
