Local and International League Legends to Go Head-to-Head in Mount Isa
Well-known Mount Isa identities including former Brisbane Broncos player Scott Prince, Member for Mount Isa Robbie Katter MP and Mount Isa Councillor Mick Tully will battle it out with international league legends at a charity game in May, with Council proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the event.
On Thursday afternoon, the International Legends of League officially launched the Mount Isa event at Alec Inch Oval. The main game will be held on Saturday, May 18 at Alec Inch Oval.
Apart from Scott, Robbie and Mick, the Linmar Mount Isa Allstars team – which will also include former Cloncurry players – comprises Paul Harkin, Dave Bartolo, David Frog Hudson, Charles Hill, Kerrod Gibson, Gavin Bunney, Cameron Conlan, Scott Kyle, Chris Thinee, Darren Munns, Brian Gull, Reg Nardoo and Tony Schaefer. They will be coached by Frank and Vern Daisy.
On the Australian side are Matt Bowen, Chris Walker, Peter Gill, Nathan Blacklock, John Hopoate, Noel Goldthorpe, Willie Tonga, John Doyle, Bryan Neibling, Craig Teevan, Ben Hannant, Terry Matterson, Kevin Campion, Stu Kelly, Ashley Harrison, Kerry Boustead and Craig Wilson.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch said the International Legends of League event was set to be one of the biggest sporting events on Mount Isa’s calendar this year, which she attributes to Councillor Peta MacRae’s active pursuit of sporting opportunities and promotional events for Mount Isa.
“With such huge names on the line-up, and many well-known former Mount Isa and Cloncurry league players, this event is guaranteed to draw a huge crowd,” Cr McCulloch said.
“What’s great is that all of the proceeds from the event will be shared between the rugby league teams in town, so everything will be going back into the community and supporting local footy clubs.
“I am really looking forward to this event. It will be such a drawcard for league fans and supporters of all ages and will be a great event for the community.”
A select group of players will arrive in Mount Isa during the week of the game for community events and school visits, talking about anti-bullying and mental health and to deliver messages around the theme of “dream, believe, achieve” to all Mount Isa primary school students, as well as Spinifex State College Junior Campus students.
A corporate day will be held on Friday, May 17, with all players and corporate partners, with a bowls day, followed by dinner at the Buffs Club to celebrate the event and both teams on stage.
There are also plans for juniors’, seniors’ and women’s games before the main match. It will be the 84th International Legends of League event.
