Council to Provide Free Wi-Fi at Mount Isa Show
Following a successful trial run of free Wi-Fi access at the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre for MineX in late May, Council will again offer free Wi-Fi in and around the centre for this year’s Mount Isa Show.
There will be eight Wi-Fi access points installed both inside and outside of the centre for this year’s Show, which will be held on Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22.
Council IT Manager Colin Sunckell said there will be three Wi-Fi network names in operation in and around the centre during this year’s show, with a free, public connection (Show2019), as well as two private, secured networks for use by Council staff and Show staff.
“When people log on to the free, public network, they will then be asked to accept our terms and conditions before proceeding,” Mr Sunckell said.
“The Wi-Fi connections access the high-speed NBN connection at Buchanan Park.
“What we’re trying to do is better understand how we can use this sort of technology to better service the community, as well as support and develop the local economic environment.”
The Wi-Fi access is part of a Council pilot program, and there are plans to offer the service at other Council-organised events at the Entertainment Centre.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch said it was great to see the trial service up and running at popular local events such as MineX and the Mount Isa Show.
“MineX recorded more than 1000 visitors across its three days, and thousands also visit the Mount Isa Show each year, so to have free, high-speed internet connections for people at these events is definitely beneficial,” Cr McCulloch said.
“Particularly with MineX, which comprises a lot of business representatives, having the Wi-Fi access there would have been very welcome.”
