Community Invited to Free NAIDOC Week Isaiah Firebrace Concert

Mount Isa City Council and Gidgee Healing are proud to present Indigenous Australian singer Isaiah Firebrace, who will perform in Mount Isa for NAIDOC Week 2019 on Tuesday, July 9.

To be held at the Civic Centre from 6.30pm, the free community concert will follow on from a free youth-empowerment workshop hosted by Isaiah for local children aged 12 and up, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm that day.

Registrations are still open for workshop participants and close at 5pm on Friday, July 5. Registration forms are available from Council’s front reception, or registration can be completed online at http://www.mountisa.qld.gov.au/naidoc-week-2019

Free transport will be provided, with Young People Ahead sponsoring a bus to take youths to the Civic Centre on the night. Children will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian in order to board the bus.

Pick-ups start at 5.30pm at Captain Cook Park on the corner of Twenty-Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue, before continuing on to Duchess Road opposite Thompson Road, Leichhardt Accommodation, Mount Isa Tenpin, Sunset State School, and the Turanga Shopping Centre.

At the Civic Centre, there will be a free sausage sizzle provided by Rotary, as well as sno-cones, and information stalls from Young People Ahead, Gidgee Healing and Headspace Mount Isa.

There will also be a smoking ceremony conducted by local Indigenous representatives Grant and Benton Nemo, as well as a Welcome to Country.

The Isaiah Live and Beyond Workshop is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Mount Isa’s youth to not only meet with Isaiah, but also be mentored by an inspirational, successful young Indigenous Australian.

The workshop is all about “no shame” and breaking down barriers, and will get kids and parents thinking about achieving their dreams and going beyond challenges.

Isaiah is an internationally acclaimed singer, having won The X Factor Australia in 2016 before representing Australia at Eurovision 2017, finishing in the top 10, all at the age of 17.
