Carols By Candlelight Helps Mount Isa Community Ensembles
Mayor Joyce McCulloch is delighted that the Mount Isa Community Ensembles (MICE) group will receive the donations from the 2018 Carols By Candlelight to help continue their commendable work bringing the magic of music to Mount Isans of all ages.
A total of $1022 was raised from donations at the Carols By Candlelight event, which was held at the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre on Saturday, December 2. People who attended provided a gold-coin donation at the entry gate.
Cr McCulloch said she was very happy with the number of people who attended the night and thanked them for their generosity and community spirit.
“More than 1000 people braved the hot weather and showed how strong their Christmas spirit and sense of community connectedness really is, which is fantastic,” Cr McCulloch said.
“Seeing the beaming faces of the children and families who were there, and looking at the sea of colourful, flashing lights as people sang along with the performers, was really special.”
The performers included locals Saberina Gasio and Khovy Inthavong, the MICE jazz band Bandana, and kids’ entertainment duo The Kazoos.
MICE aims to promote the performing arts within Mount Isa and engage Mount Isa residents in a variety of age- and ability-based musical ensembles, including choirs, a jazz band and concert bands – and, when they’re all together, they become the Mount Isa Symphony Orchestra. They also create opportunities for people with disabilities to be included in their programs and performances.
