Cr Lauren Merrick

I was born in Sherwood, Brisbane in 1948. From the age of 4 to 12 years home was on Curtis Island. My early schooling was as a boarder at Range College Rockhampton and Emu Park Convent. My Parents moved to Brisbane, and the rest of my schooling was at Grovely Convent and St. Columba's, Wilston.

I Married Barry Merrick in 1972 and was a mother to David in 1973 and Ann in 1976.
In 1977 Barry was transferred to TAFE College Mount Isa, and we begun our love affair with Mount Isa.

In 1965 I started General Nursing Training at Royal Brisbane Hospital and became an Enrolled Nurse in 1971. From 1972 until 1985 I was a mother and housewife.

I have also worked as a Clerk in the Printing Department of Mount Isa Mines Limited. In April 1996 I became the Secretary to Mount Isa Agricultural Show Society, and stayed in that position until December 2007.

I enjoy quilting and playing in my sewing room.

Where ever I go in the world, I have always promoted Mount Isa any way I can. I'm very proud to call myself a citizen of Mount Isa.

As a councillor, I aim to bring the Council back to the Community and have more Community involvement in Council policies and visions and encourage more housing development.

Living in the North-West has given me confidence to be able to strive and do things that I never thought possible while living in Brisbane.

In the eleven years I was Secretary for the Mount Isa Show, I was able to meet people from all walks of life, from Premiers to small children and to work with a team of dedicated people in organising and presenting the best show in the North-West. This developed my skills of working with a team of like minded people, and when need be, able to make decisions and to bend or stand strong where needed.

Mount Isa is the home of my heart and here I intend to stay.
