John Campbell Miles Walking Track
Memorial
The John Campbell Miles Memorial was officially unveiled on the 8th of August 1968. The memorial was erected to commemorate the remarkable life of the man who discovered the first ore in the area in 1923.
The monument was commissioned by the Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with the Mount Isa City Council in 1967 and was originally crowned by the town clock. The clock was removed from the memorial in 2003 due to increasing maintenance issues.
In collaboration with Queensland Health, Mount Isa City Council added to the significance of the memorial by establishing a walking track around the CBD to assist in promoting the 10,000 steps program. The circuit is a total distance of 4600m or 5520 steps and travels from Camooweal Street, Duchess Road, Transmission Street, along East Street and up Marian Street. Curcuit markers have been put in place to identify the streets as part of the 10,000 Steps Circuit.
