What's On

WORLD WAR II PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION

In 1939 the population of Mount Isa was 1500. By 1943, 6000 Australian and American troops were stationed there along with various Government employees and Chinese labourers. Much needed war supplies were railed from Townsville to Mount Isa which was the end of the line. In 1939 the road north to Camooweal was not much more than a track and the trip could take several days and so the task of turning the track into a sealed bitumen road began.

The exhibition will showcase photographs (and militaria) of Mount Isa, the people and Army establishments during the war, most of which has never been displayed before.

The exhibition seeks to increase awareness in the local community of the vital role that Mount Isa played during the War.

On display at the Civic Centre from 4th - 31st November, 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.

Entry is free.
